Assistant/Associate Professor of History Department: History, Philosophy & Social Sciences Position: Full Time (10 Month), Tenure-Track position with complete benefits package Wage: Up to $54,000 for Assistant Professor and up to $60,000 for Associate Professor, as per the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Union Affiliation: MFPE Starting Date: August 1, 2024 Benefits Include: Insurance package, Mandatory retirement plan, Dependent partial tuition waiver, Faculty/staff tuition waiver Wellness program: Description: The University of Montana Western invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor in American History, to begin August 2024.
Area of specialization is open, but priority will be given to candidates with teaching and/or research background in the history of the American West.
As the main American historian in a small department, the successful candidate will teach both American history survey courses, upper division courses in the area of specialty, and demonstrate a breadth of teaching interest/experience.
Montana Western is defined by our Experience One mode, in which students and faculty engage in one course at a time.
Each course meets for an intensive eighteen-day block, Monday-Friday, for three hours per day.
Block scheduling allows students to engage with the authentic practices of the discipline, and faculty are expected to create experiential learning environments that align with that overall mission.
Tenure-track faculty teach a 3/3 load, which leaves one block per semester free for faculty to focus on research, new course preparation, service activities, and other forms of professional development.
We are searching for candidates who can demonstrate professionalism and good citizenship, evidence of the ability to maintain scholarly productivity, and a commitment to professional service including guiding undergraduate research, advising, assessment efforts, committee work, and other departmental or university duties as assigned.

Montana Western is the only public four-year college in the nation offering Experience One (X1), experiential learning delivered on the block schedule.
Class sizes are small and students take a single course at a time, three hours each day for 18 days, before moving on to the next course.
Each course is four credits and four blocks are offered each semester.
The block schedule facilitates field and lab work, undergraduate research, study travel, and interdisciplinary teaching.
